Oil grade is not a detail

The number on the bottle describes how the oil behaves at temperature, and modern engines are built with clearances that assume a particular behaviour. Put in something thicker than specified and it takes longer to reach the parts that need it on a cold start. Put in something thinner and the film between metal surfaces gets marginal when things get hot.

Some engines also require oil meeting a specific manufacturer approval rather than just a viscosity grade, particularly European engines and anything with a diesel particulate filter. Those approvals exist because the additive package matters as much as the thickness, and using an oil without the right one can shorten the life of components that have nothing to do with lubrication.

We put in what your engine is specified to run. That is not us being fussy, it is the second half of what keeps a logbook service valid under a new car warranty.

What Brisbane heat does to it

Oil degrades faster hot than cold, and a Brisbane summer supplies heat from two directions at once.

There is the heat the engine makes, which is worse in stop-start traffic where there is no airflow through the bay and the cooling system is working harder than it would at speed. Then there is the heat the car absorbs sitting in the open. A vehicle parked on a Sunnybank driveway or in an uncovered shopping centre car park through a February afternoon starts its next trip already soaked in heat, and the oil begins that trip from a higher baseline than it would in a garage.

Neither effect is dramatic on its own. Together, over a couple of summers, they are the reason a car serviced strictly by the odometer can show oil in worse condition than the kilometres suggest.

Short trips and multi-car households

Sunnybank households often run more cars than drivers, and a lot of the local trips are short. Down Mains Road to Sunnybank Plaza and back is not far enough for an engine to reach full operating temperature, which means moisture and fuel accumulate in the oil rather than being burned off.

Combine that with the heat and you have the argument for servicing toward the shorter end of the manufacturer's interval rather than stretching to the longer end. If a car in the household barely gets used at all, it still needs servicing on the calendar, because oil ages sitting still and brake fluid absorbs moisture whether the car moves or not.

What is in the service

A full safety check on the hoist covering brakes, tyres, steering, suspension, lights, belts, hoses and leaks. Fresh engine oil and a new filter in the correct grade. A fuel system clean. Coolant, brake fluid, power steering and washer fluid checked and topped up. Then a written report on what needs doing now and what can wait.

All makes and models, including European, diesel, 4WD, fleet, commercial, hybrid and electric. Nothing extra gets done without a call and your approval first.

The other things heat gets at

Oil is the obvious one, but a Brisbane summer works on the rest of the car as well, and all of it goes on your report.

Coolant does the actual temperature management, and coolant that is old loses corrosion protection long before it loses the ability to carry heat. Battery life is shortened by heat far more than by cold, which is why so many batteries fail in the first cool snap after a hot summer rather than during it. Rubber hoses harden and belts glaze. Tyres perish from the sidewall on a car parked in the sun regardless of how much tread is left.

None of that is dramatic in any single year, and that is exactly why it gets missed. The point of putting the car on a hoist and writing down condition is to catch the slow ones.

Common questions

FAQ — Car Service in Sunnybank

What oil do you use?

Whatever your engine is specified to run, including manufacturer-approved grades for European engines and vehicles with a diesel particulate filter.

Does oil grade really matter?

Yes. Engine clearances assume a particular viscosity behaviour, and some engines require a specific manufacturer approval rather than just a grade.

Does Brisbane heat shorten oil life?

It works oil harder, particularly in stop-start traffic and on cars parked in the open. Servicing at the shorter end of the interval is sensible here.

My second car barely gets driven. Does it still need servicing?

Yes, on the calendar rather than the odometer. Oil ages sitting still and brake fluid absorbs moisture over time.

Why does the price vary if the service is the same?

Oil capacity, oil grade and filter type. A diesel ute takes more oil of a different specification than a small petrol hatch.

Do you service hybrids and EVs?

Yes, along with European, diesel, 4WD, fleet and commercial vehicles.

Do you have a Sunnybank workshop?

No. Our only workshop is 2 Baldock St, Moorooka.

What does it cost?

From $330 for a full service, from $149 for oil and filter. Exact figure when you book.
