Brake Repairs in Sunnybank
Some brake symptoms can wait until the next service and some cannot. If your car is grinding, or the pedal sinks towards the floor while you hold steady pressure at the lights, that is the second kind. Stop driving it and ring 0402 723 464.
The symptoms that mean stop now
Grinding. The friction material is gone and the steel backing plate is running on the rotor. Stopping distances are already longer than they should be, and every stop from here is destroying a rotor that could probably have been machined a fortnight ago.
A pedal that sinks. Hold firm pressure at a red light. If the pedal slowly travels towards the floor, the hydraulic system is not holding pressure. That is a master cylinder or a leak, and it can fail completely without much more warning.
A pedal that goes to the floor once and comes back. Usually air or vapour in the system. If fluid has boiled on a long descent it will do this, and it will do it again on the next hill.
Smoke or a burning smell from one wheel. A brake that is stuck on generates enormous heat. It can boil the fluid in that corner and it can damage the hub.
What to do instead of driving it
Have the car towed or ring us and describe what it is doing. We would far rather talk you out of a drive across the south side than have you arrive with a rotor destroyed on the way in.
If the car is at a shopping centre or a workplace and you cannot move it, tell us that when you call and we will talk through the options.
Why it gets worse quickly
Brakes fail progressively rather than all at once, which is what makes them easy to put off. The cost curve is not gentle though.
Pads worn to the indicator are a pad job. Pads worn through to metal usually take the rotor with them, doubling the parts. Keep going and the heat can seize a caliper piston or cook a wheel bearing, which turns a routine repair into a much larger one.
The hydraulic side is worse again, because it can go from degraded to gone without a graceful middle stage. That is the difference between a fault and a failure.
The one exception worth knowing
Not every alarming noise is an emergency. A single loud squeal on the first stop of a damp morning is surface rust, and a light scraping that vanishes after two or three stops is the same thing.
The difference is persistence. A noise that is still there once the car is warm and the rotors are dry has a mechanical cause, and a grinding note that gets louder under harder braking is metal on metal regardless of the weather.
Sunnybank cars and what we see
Sunnybank sits around Mains Road and Kessels Road, next to Sunnybank Hills, Macgregor, Robertson and Runcorn, with Sunnybank Plaza pulling constant local traffic. That is heavy stop-start use on the front brakes.
We also see a lot of cars here that do a mix of tight local driving and longer runs down the Pacific Motorway. That combination hides wear, because brakes feel fine at motorway speeds right up until they are asked to do a hard stop in traffic.
Full detail on every symptom is on the parent brake repairs page. Servicing and inspections for the suburb are on the Sunnybank page.
When you get here
The car goes straight up on a hoist and all four wheels come off. We measure pad material and rotor thickness against the manufacturer's minimum, check hoses and fluid, and pressure test where the symptom points at the hydraulic side.
You get told what is wrong and what it will cost before any part is touched. Contact us for current pricing. We are at 2 Baldock St, Moorooka, open Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm and Saturday 8am to 3pm.
Common questions
FAQ — Brake repairs in Sunnybank
Can I drive to you with grinding brakes from Sunnybank?
We would rather you did not. Every stop is cutting the rotor, and the car is not stopping in the distance you expect.
My pedal goes soft after a few hard stops. Is that dangerous?
Yes. It usually means the fluid is boiling, which means old fluid that has absorbed moisture. It will happen again on the next descent.
How urgent is a handbrake that will not hold?
Not an emergency on flat ground, but it is a safety certificate fail and it matters on any slope.
Can you fit me in the same day?
For genuinely urgent brake faults we do our best. Ring rather than booking online so we know what the car is doing.
Will you have parts for my car?
Common pads and rotors are on the shelf. Give us the rego when you call so anything model specific gets ordered before you arrive.
Is a squeal urgent?
Not usually. A squeal that persists once the car is warm is the wear indicator, which is a booking rather than an emergency.
What if the damage is worse than pads?
We will tell you before doing anything. A seized caliper or a cooked bearing changes the job and the price, and you approve it either way.
