Brake Repairs in Coorparoo

Most people booking brakes have no idea what they are actually paying for, which makes it hard to judge a quote. Here is what a proper brake job at our Moorooka workshop involves from the moment a Coorparoo car goes up on the hoist. It is more than swapping two blocks of friction material.

Step one, the measurement

Wheels off, all four. Pad material measured corner by corner, rotor thickness checked with a micrometer against the minimum figure stamped into the rotor, faces inspected for scoring, lipping and heat cracking.

Hoses get checked for perishing and swelling, hard lines for corrosion, fluid for condition and the handbrake for holding force. Whatever the wear pattern is, it gets read rather than ignored, because an inner pad worn twice as fast as its outer partner is telling you something about the caliper.

Step two, the quote

You get the figures, then the options, then a price. If the rotors have material left they get machined rather than replaced, because that is the cheaper honest outcome.

Nothing gets ordered or fitted before you agree. Brake pricing depends heavily on the vehicle, so we quote after the measurement rather than over the phone. Contact us for current pricing.

Step three, the actual work

The caliper comes off and the carrier gets cleaned back properly. Old pads leave a build-up of rust and debris in the abutment area, and new pads dropped onto that will bind instead of sliding freely.

Slide pins come out, get cleaned and get regreased with the right high temperature product. A seized pin is one of the most common causes of uneven pad wear and of a car pulling under braking, and it is also one of the cheapest things to get right while everything is apart.

The piston gets wound or pressed back and the dust boot checked. Rotors go on clean hubs, because a speck of rust between hub face and rotor is enough to introduce runout that feels exactly like a warped disc.

Most pad sets come with a hardware kit, meaning new shims, clips and abutment plates. Reusing rusted clips saves a few dollars and costs you noise, because a pad that cannot sit and slide cleanly will rattle or squeal no matter how good the friction material is.

Step four, torque and test

Wheels go back on with a torque wrench to the manufacturer's figure, not a rattle gun and a guess. Over-torqued wheels distort rotors, which is a genuinely common cause of pulsation on cars that have been through a quick fitting shop.

Then the car gets road tested. Pedal feel, pull, noise and a check that the pads are seating evenly. A brake job that has not been driven is a brake job that has not been finished.

Coorparoo traffic and what it asks of brakes

Coorparoo sits where Old Cleveland Road and Logan Road pull traffic in from the south east, next to Camp Hill, Greenslopes, Stones Corner and Carina. Local driving is dense, and dense driving is what loads front brakes.

There are also a lot of units in Coorparoo with basement car parks, and cars that live on a tight ramp do a surprising amount of low speed braking with the handbrake in constant use. Rear brakes and handbrake mechanisms wear faster in that pattern than they do on a flat driveway.

The technical background sits on the parent brake repairs page, and the rest of what we do for the suburb is on the Coorparoo page.

Getting the car in

We are at 2 Baldock St, Moorooka, a straightforward run across the inner south. Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm, Saturday 8am to 3pm, with an after-hours key drop if you want the car on a hoist first thing.

Most front brake jobs are done the same day. Bring the rego number when you book so any model specific parts can be on the shelf before the car arrives.

Common questions

FAQ — Brake repairs in Coorparoo

Why does a brake job take longer at some places than others?

Because cleaning carriers, servicing slide pins and torquing wheels properly takes time. Skipping those steps is what makes a two-hour job a forty-minute one.

Do you use a torque wrench on the wheels?

Always. Over-tightened wheel nuts distort rotors and cause pulsation that gets blamed on the discs.

What is caliper servicing and do I need it?

Cleaning and regreasing the slide pins and abutment surfaces so the pads move freely. It is part of a proper brake job rather than an extra.

My car lives in a Coorparoo unit basement. Does that matter?

It means a lot of low speed braking and heavy handbrake use, so rear brakes and handbrake cables tend to need attention sooner.

Can you do the brakes while I am at work?

Yes. Drop the car in the morning or use the key drop the night before, and we will call with the findings before anything is done.

Do you road test after brake work?

Every time. Pedal feel and even bite cannot be checked in a workshop bay.

Will new brakes feel different at first?

Slightly. Pads need a couple of hundred kilometres of normal driving to bed in and reach full bite.

How do I pay and is there a warranty?

All major cards or cash, and parts carry their supplier or manufacturer warranty.
