The short version
A Queensland safety certificate runs for two months or 2,000km from the day it is issued, whichever ends first. Book it too early and it expires mid-sale. Book it too late and your advertisement cannot legally go up. We issue certificates at 2 Baldock St, Moorooka, an easy run across from Coorparoo. Contact us for pricing.
Two clocks, both running
The calendar clock and the odometer clock start together at the inspection and either one can finish the certificate on its own. Sixty-one days and the certificate is gone even if the car has not moved. Two thousand and one kilometres and it is gone even if you got it last week. For a licensed dealer the shape is different again. Three months of calendar, but only 1,000km, because a dealer vehicle is expected to sit rather than commute. Nothing extends either clock. If the sale drags past the expiry, you book a fresh inspection and pay for it again.
The order that works for a private sale
Deal with anything you already know about first. If a globe has been out for a month or the wipers smear, fix those before an inspector writes them down. Then get the car mechanically presentable, because a service invoice dated a fortnight before the sale does more for the price than almost anything else you can spend the same money on (see our car servicing page). Then book the inspection, close to the day you actually intend to list. Then write the advertisement with the certificate number in it, because Queensland requires the number to appear in the ad. Then sell, and hand the buyer the certificate with a completed transfer form. Doing it in that order means the 2,000km is spent by the buyer's test drives rather than by six weeks of your own commuting while you think about whether you really want to sell.
Why Coorparoo cars come in with brake wear
Coorparoo sits where Old Cleveland Road and Logan Road carry a serious amount of traffic through the same few hundred metres, and most local driving is stop-start on one or the other. Add a run out to Westfield Carindale on a Saturday and you have a driving pattern made almost entirely of braking. Pads and rotors wear on brake applications, not on kilometres. A Coorparoo car doing 12,000km a year on arterial roads can be harder on its front brakes than a car doing 25,000km of open highway. Brake condition is assessed in the inspection, and pads worn past the indicator are a straightforward fail. Handbrake operation is also assessed, and it is the one thing arterial driving never exercises, so it quietly seizes or stretches. Worth a check before you book.
If it does not pass
You get the failed items in writing and fourteen days to have them repaired and re-presented. Only those items are re-checked, not the whole car. The repairs can happen here rather than at a second business, which for most people is the entire reason to book a certificate at a workshop. Parts we fit carry the supplier or manufacturer warranty that comes with them.
What the inspection covers
Tyres against the 1.5mm minimum across the tread face. Brakes, including pads, rotors, handbrake, fluid, lines and hoses. Steering and suspension play. Every exterior light and the horn. Windscreen damage in the driver's line of sight, and wipers that actually clear rather than smear. Seatbelt condition and mounting points. Structural rust, doors that will not close, and sharp edges. Exhaust smoke and leaks. Nothing cosmetic is assessed, and neither is anything about how the car runs. A worn clutch, a tired gearbox or an air conditioner that blows warm will not stop a certificate being issued.

Common questions
FAQ — Roadworthy Certificate in Coorparoo
When should I book the safety certificate if I am selling?
Close to when you intend to list, not when you first decide to sell. The 2,000km allowance starts at inspection.
Does the certificate number really have to be in the advertisement?
Yes. Queensland requires a valid certificate before a registered vehicle is advertised, and the number goes in the ad.
What if the car sells faster than I expected?
That is the good problem. The certificate stays valid, you hand it to the buyer with the transfer form and you are done.
Do Coorparoo driving conditions actually affect brake wear?
Brakes wear on how often you use them. Stop-start running on Old Cleveland Road and Logan Road applies them far more often per kilometre than highway driving does.
Can you check my brakes before the inspection rather than after?
Yes, and it is usually cheaper. Ask when you book and we will measure pads and rotors first.
How long does the inspection take?
Usually under an hour if nothing needs a closer look.
Do you have a Coorparoo address?
No. Our only workshop is 2 Baldock St, Moorooka. Coorparoo is a short run away.
What do you accept for payment?
All major cards and cash.
