Smash Repairs in Coorparoo
Old Cleveland Road generates a steady share of the panel damage that comes to our Moorooka workshop, from minor car park hits to more significant front-end impacts. Every panel decision — repair or replace — is made on the individual panel based on what the metal can support. Paint is matched to the actual car, not just the code. Repair or replace: how the decision is made
Every damaged panel gets the same question first: can the metal be brought back to shape, or does the panel need replacing? The answer is not a policy or a default. It depends on where the damage sits, how deep it goes, and what the metal will support.
Shallow damage on a flat section of a panel that is not structural can usually be worked back. A crease through a character line, a dent on the edge of a pillar, or damage on a panel that has already been repaired once often cannot, because the metal has been worked and has less left to give.
Where replacement is the right call, the replaced panel is primed, colour-matched and cleared to the same standard as the surrounding panels. Where repair is the right call, the result should be invisible.
Bumper impacts and what is behind them
Old Cleveland Road is a busy arterial with intersections and heavy pedestrian and parking activity, and the combination produces its share of bumper and side panel damage. Modern bumper assemblies are more complex than they look from outside.
Behind the outer skin there is an energy-absorbing foam, a plastic backing, often a mounting rail or absorber, and increasingly a row of sensors, cameras and radar units. A low-speed impact that barely marks the skin can crack the foam, damage the backing and knock a sensor out of alignment.
All of that gets checked and refitted when we do the panel work. A camera or a blind-spot sensor that tests correctly at completion is part of the standard rather than an optional add-on.
Old damage under new
When a panel is stripped back for repair, previous damage sometimes shows. A shallow dent that was never repaired, a past scuff that was touched up rather than properly done, or a previous repair that used filler over a crease.
That old damage was there before the current accident and is outside the scope of the claim. We point it out when we find it and give you the option to have it addressed separately. It is not included in the insurance quote unless it is directly related to the current damage.
Paint matching — what the process actually involves
The colour code on the vehicle is a starting point. Paint formulas are built from it and then sprayed onto a test panel and compared to the actual vehicle in daylight. Metallic and pearl colours involve a second variable — the particle size and density — which means the base formula often needs adjustment.
Once the mix is right, the panel is sprayed, cleared and blended into the adjacent panel where needed. Blending means the transition from the new paint to the surrounding paint happens gradually rather than at a hard edge. The visible result should read as one vehicle, not as one panel.

Common questions
FAQ — Smash repairs in Coorparoo
Will a repaired panel look as good as the original?
Done correctly, yes. The standard we work to is a panel that reads the same as the surrounding ones in natural daylight.
Why would you replace a panel for a small dent?
Where the dent sits on a structural section, or where the crease has work-hardened the metal beyond what can be reshaped, replacement gives a better result than repair.
My bumper has a parking sensor and a camera behind it. Does that complicate things?
It is common now and it is part of the job. Sensors and cameras are removed, the panel work is done, and they are refitted and tested before the car goes back.
How do you match the paint?
We start with the code and then mix and test against the actual vehicle. A car that has been in the sun for a few years is not the factory colour anymore, so the code is a reference, not the answer.
How far is Coorparoo from your workshop?
Old Cleveland Road to Ipswich Road is a short drive. 2 Baldock St, Moorooka is our only address.
Someone hit my car in a car park and left. What do I do?
Photograph everything and report it to police. Whether your policy covers unidentified drivers depends on your cover level, so check with your insurer before assuming you are out of pocket.
Does a smash repair affect the car's resale value?
A well-done repair on a maintained car should have minimal impact. A visible colour mismatch, a poorly shut door or a gap that is obviously out of line will affect value. That is why the standard of the work matters.
Can you repair the mechanical damage from the accident as well?
Yes. Alignment, steering and suspension work happens in this workshop, so both sides of the damage are handled together.
Can the panel be saved?
Bring the car in and we will tell you whether the panel can be saved
