Car Battery Replacement in Brisbane

Our approach

Why we test the system rather than the part

From the driver's seat, a dead battery, a dead alternator and a dead starter all look the same. You turn the key and the car does not go. The difference only shows up on a tester.

That is why a car that comes in flat gets the battery, the alternator and the starter checked in one sitting. A new battery fitted to a car with a failed alternator is flat again within the week, and a good alternator gets blamed for a battery that was already four years old and cooked. Testing them together costs a few extra minutes and saves people from paying twice.

Common complaints

What people usually ring us about

  • Slow, lazy cranking first thing in the morning that improves once the car has run
  • The car starts on a jump but dies the moment the leads come off
  • Battery warning light glowing on the dash while driving
  • One solid click when you turn the key, then nothing
  • Rapid clicking, like a machine gun, and no crank at all
  • The car goes flat if it sits for two or three days
  • Dash lights flickering, a window that has stopped working, or an accessory that died overnight

Each of those points at a different part of the car, and the last one usually points at the wiring rather than any component at all.

Local conditions

Brisbane heat is what kills batteries here

Cold gets the blame in the ads because a flat battery on a frosty morning makes a better story. Heat is what actually finishes them. High under-bonnet temperatures speed up the internal corrosion of the plates and drive fluid loss.

In South East Queensland a car battery commonly lasts around three to four years. In a cooler climate the same battery might see five or six. So if yours is coming up on its third summer here and the car has started to crank slowly, that is not bad luck.

Codes and faults

A fault code names a circuit, not a failed part

Plenty of electrical work starts with a scan tool, and a scan tool is genuinely useful. What it gives you is a code describing the circuit the computer was unhappy about. What it does not give you is the name of the component that failed.

Replacing the part mentioned in the code without testing it first is the single most common way people waste money on car electrics. We read the codes, then go and measure what the wiring and the component are actually doing.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if it is the battery or the alternator?

If it cranks slowly every morning but runs fine once going, suspect the battery. If it starts on a jump and then dies once the leads come off, suspect the charging system.

What does the battery warning light actually mean?

Despite the picture on the dash, it usually means the charging system has stopped charging. The battery is what will go flat as a result, but it is rarely the cause.

How long should a battery last in Brisbane?

Around three to four years is normal here. Heat shortens battery life more than cold does.

Can you come to me?

Yes, we cover Brisbane, Logan, Ipswich, Moreton Bay and Redlands with a mobile service.

Do you work on European cars?

Yes, along with diesel, 4WD, fleet, commercial, hybrid and electric vehicles.

My car is a hybrid. Does it still have a normal battery?

Yes. Hybrids and EVs still run a 12 volt battery for the computers and accessories, and it still fails like any other.

Can you test the battery while I wait?

Usually, yes. It is a short job and we would rather do it before you need a tow.

Something drains the battery when the car sits for a few days. Can you find it?

Yes. That is a parasitic drain and it is a normal part of our diagnostic work.

Do the parts you fit come with a warranty?

Yes. Every part we fit carries the supplier or manufacturer warranty that comes with it.
