Engine and Cooling System Repairs in Brisbane

Engine and cooling faults are the ones that get expensive when they are left alone. We diagnose and repair engines, cooling systems and fuel systems at our Moorooka workshop, from a check engine light that came on this morning through to a head gasket or a rebuild. Every job starts by finding the actual cause, because guessing at engine faults is how people end up paying for the same problem twice.

Engine and Cooling System Repairs in Brisbane

How they connect

The two systems are really one system

People think of the engine and the cooling system as separate things. They are not. An engine that runs a few degrees too hot for long enough will warp a cylinder head, cook a head gasket and start consuming oil. Half the engine work we do at Moorooka started life as a cooling problem somebody drove through.

Our approach

We diagnose before we quote

There is a way of doing engine work that involves replacing the cheapest likely part, seeing if the problem goes away, then replacing the next cheapest. Customers pay for that method one part at a time and it can run for months.

We would rather charge you for an hour of proper diagnosis and then quote a repair we are confident in. You get told what we found, how we found it, and what happens if you do nothing. If the honest answer is that the car is not worth the repair, we say that instead of writing a quote.

Local conditions

Brisbane is hard on cooling systems

Sitting in stopped traffic on Ipswich Road in February is about the hardest thing you can ask a cooling system to do. There is no airflow through the radiator except what the fan can pull, the engine bay is soaking in its own heat, and the air conditioning condenser sitting in front of the radiator is dumping more heat into the same airflow.

A cooling system that copes fine on a highway run can be marginal in those conditions and you will never know until the gauge climbs. Southeast Queensland also runs long service intervals into humid heat, which ages coolant faster than the same kilometres would in a cooler climate.

If your temperature gauge has started sitting higher than it used to, that is worth a look now rather than in January.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

My car is overheating. Can I drive it to you?

Usually no. Once the gauge is in the red you can warp a head in a couple of minutes of driving. Pull over, let it cool completely, and call us before you move it.

Do I need a diagnosis if I already know the code?

Usually yes. The code narrows things down to a system. It rarely names the failed component, and replacing parts on the strength of a code alone is how people spend $600 fixing a $90 fault.

Do you work on diesels and European cars?

Yes, along with 4WD, fleet, commercial, hybrid and electric vehicles.

Is a blown head gasket always worth fixing?

No. On an older car with high kilometres it can cost more than the vehicle is worth. We give you the numbers and let you decide rather than talking you into it.

How long will my car be here?

Depends entirely on the job. A thermostat is often same day. A head gasket is typically several days once parts and machining are factored in.

Do you use genuine parts?

Where the job calls for it, yes. Otherwise we fit quality aftermarket parts and tell you which is which before we order anything.
