What a fail actually involves

Nothing gets confiscated. Your registration is untouched. The inspector records the items that did not meet the standard and hands you the list. From that point the clock is fourteen days. Have the work done, bring the car back, and the re-inspection covers the failed items only rather than starting the whole thing again. If you go past fourteen days, it reverts to a full inspection. The part people do not expect is how ordinary the list usually is. A globe. A wiper blade. One tyre below 1.5mm. A handbrake that needs adjusting. Occasionally something bigger, but the average fail list is short and cheap.

Why the repair question matters more than the inspection

An inspection-only business can tell you what failed but cannot fix it. That leaves you booking a second appointment somewhere else, then a third to come back for the re-inspection. Here it is one place. If your Tarragindi car fails on a globe and a wiper, both get changed while you wait. If it fails on brake pads or a tyre, that is the same hoist and often the same day. Parts we fit carry the supplier or manufacturer warranty that comes with them.

Tarragindi hills and what they do to brakes

Tarragindi is built across ridges, and the streets running down toward Ekibin and Wellers Hill are genuinely steep. That shows up in inspections. Constant descending means front pads wear faster than the same car would wear them on flat ground, and it means the handbrake gets a real workout every time the car is parked on a slope. Handbrake travel and holding ability are both assessed in a safety certificate inspection, and a cable that has stretched is a common Tarragindi fail that owners never notice, because they have quietly adapted to pulling the lever two clicks further. If your car lives on a hill and the pads have never been replaced, get them measured before you book rather than after.

The rest of the inspection

Tyres against the 1.5mm minimum, steering and suspension play, all exterior lights and the horn, windscreen damage in the driver's line of sight, wipers, seatbelts, structural rust and exhaust leaks. Cosmetic condition is not assessed.

Fixing before the inspection instead of after

There is a version of this where you never see a fail list at all, and it is usually cheaper. If you already know the car has a habit, tell us when you book and we will look at that first. Owners are generally right about their own cars. If you have been topping up the coolant, if the steering has developed a knock over the speed humps, if one headlight has been out since autumn, none of that is a surprise to you and none of it should be a surprise on the day. Booking the inspection alongside a service is the other way people avoid the problem. The car is on the hoist anyway, the wear items get measured anyway, and anything marginal gets dealt with in the same visit rather than becoming a fail, a repair booking and a re-inspection (see our car servicing page). That is a choice, not a requirement. Plenty of Tarragindi cars come in for the certificate alone and pass without touching a thing.

Common questions

FAQ — Roadworthy Certificate in Tarragindi

What happens if my car fails the safety certificate?

You get a written list of failed items and fourteen days to repair and re-present them. Only those items are re-checked.

Can you do the repairs yourselves?

Yes. We are a full mechanical workshop, so globes, wipers, brakes, tyres and suspension work are all handled here at our approved inspection station.

What if I miss the fourteen days?

It goes back to a full inspection rather than a re-check of the failed items.

Do the Tarragindi hills really affect a roadworthy?

They affect brakes and handbrakes, both of which are assessed. Steep streets wear front pads faster and stretch handbrake cables over time.

Does my rego get cancelled if I fail?

No. A failed inspection does not affect your registration. It only means you cannot yet sell or transfer the vehicle.

How long is the certificate good for once I pass?

Two months or 2,000km for a private seller. Three months or 1,000km for a dealer.

Do you have a Tarragindi workshop?

No. Our only address is 2 Baldock St, Moorooka, which is a short run from Tarragindi.

Is there a warranty on parts you fit?

Yes, every part carries its supplier or manufacturer warranty.
