Mobile Mechanic in Holland Park
A car that will not start is the one fault where towing it first makes the least sense. Holland Park is on our Brisbane Southside mobile run, so we come to the car, test the whole starting and charging circuit where it sits, and fix it there if it can be fixed there.
Why a no-start needs testing rather than guessing
A flat battery, a battery that will not hold charge, a failing alternator and a tired starter motor all look identical from the driver's seat. The car does nothing, or it turns over slowly and stops.
Replacing the battery is the guess most people make, and sometimes it works. When the real fault is an alternator that has stopped charging, the new battery goes flat in a few days and the money is gone.
What actually gets tested
The battery under load rather than just its resting voltage, because a battery can read fine sitting still and collapse the moment the starter draws current.
Alternator output at idle and at higher revs, and whether the charging voltage is holding where it should be. The starter circuit, including voltage drop across the cables and connections, since a corroded earth strap does a very convincing impression of a dead starter.
Parasitic drain, if the car goes flat overnight but tests fine otherwise. Something is drawing current with the car shut down, and finding it is a measurement job.
What we can sort at the kerb
Battery replacement with the charging system checked afterwards, so the new one is not going into a car that will kill it. Alternator and starter replacement on a lot of vehicles, depending on where the manufacturer decided to bolt them.
Jump starting and getting a car mobile again, plus diagnostics on warning lights and rough running while we are there. Servicing and brake work travel just as well if the car is due.
Where the starter or alternator is buried behind other components, it becomes a hoist job. We will tell you that on the phone if the vehicle is a known example, and on site otherwise.
Why batteries fail when they do
Heat is harder on a battery than cold is, and Brisbane supplies plenty of it. High under-bonnet temperatures accelerate the internal chemistry that eventually kills a battery, which is why Queensland batteries often have shorter working lives than the marketing suggests.
Short trips are the other factor. Starting an engine takes a substantial amount out of a battery, and a five minute drive does not put it back. A car used only for local errands can be running at a permanent slight deficit for months before it finally will not crank.
Age matters too. Most batteries give a few years of reliable service and then fail fairly abruptly rather than fading gently, usually on the first cold morning or after a week parked.
Testing beats waiting
A battery can be load tested long before it strands you, and so can the charging system. If yours is getting on and the car has started sounding lazy, that is worth checking rather than finding out in a car park.
We check the charging side whenever we fit a battery, because putting a new one into a car with a weak alternator wastes it.
Holland Park addresses and access
Holland Park runs off Logan Road on the south east side next to Tarragindi, Wellers Hill, Greenslopes and Mount Gravatt, and it is part of the Brisbane Southside area our vans cover.
Local streets rise and fall a good deal, and some driveways are steep enough that jacking is not safe. For battery and electrical work that often does not matter, since much of it happens with the car on its wheels. For brakes or a service it does, so mention the driveway when you book.
If the car has to come in, 2 Baldock St, Moorooka has hoists, on-site parking and an after-hours key drop. The parent mobile mechanic page covers what travels and what does not, and the rest of what we do locally is on the Holland Park page.
Common questions
FAQ — Mobile mechanic in Holland Park
Do you cover Holland Park?
Yes. Holland Park is part of our Brisbane Southside mobile area, along with Mount Gravatt, Sunnybank and Coorparoo.
My car will not start. Do I need a tow?
Usually not. Most starting faults can be tested and often repaired where the car is parked.
How do I know whether it is the battery or the alternator?
You do not from the seat, which is why both get tested. Replacing a battery when the alternator is the fault just moves the problem.
My battery keeps going flat overnight. Why?
Either the battery will not hold charge or something is drawing current with the car off. Both are measurable.
Can you replace an alternator at my address?
On many vehicles yes. Where it is buried behind other components it becomes a workshop job, and we will say so.
Do you carry batteries in the van?
Common sizes, yes. Give us the rego when you call so the right one is on board.
Is a slow crank a battery problem?
Sometimes. It can also be voltage drop across corroded cables or a failing starter, so it gets tested rather than assumed.
Do you work on hybrids and EVs?
Yes. They still have a conventional low voltage battery, and it still fails in the usual ways.
